New Faces at Swawou

We are delighted to welcome many new faces to Swawou this term, with enrolment increasing from 60 to 90 pupils. With the help of the local community, the Swawou team identified and recruited girls from disadvantaged homes who would otherwise be unable to attend and/or stay at school. All 90 girls have received free textbooks, stationery and uniforms.

Moving in

This year sees the return of the normal academic timetable, running from September 2016 to June 2017, after over a year of following a ‘catch up’ curriculum in the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak.

Training Workshop For Swawou Teachers

The teachers attended a training workshop on accelerated learning last month. This is helping them to deliver the primary curriculum in a condensed amount of time, necessary due to the delays the Ebola outbreak caused to education in the country.

Enrolment of Further Pupils

A further 10 girls were newly enrolled at Swawou in January. This brings the total number of pupils to 61.

LBR Gifts For The Girls of Swawou

The girls received gifts from the team at Law Business Research in London. The girls were really excited to open their parcels, which contained an assortment of stationery and goodies. The girls would like to say a big TENKI to everyone at LBR.

Secondary Education Support

In January, we provided 16 secondary school scholarships to graduating Swawou pupils. Swawou will continue to monitor their progress, and support them where necessary to ensure that they can stay in school and secure a higher education.

Building update

In January, NY based architect Andrew Perkins of Orkidstudio arrived in Kenema to resume work on our new school building, which had been halted for almost two years, due to the Ebola outbreak. Pupils and staff have been busy weeding the garden at the new school site in preparation to grow more crops.
